What Should I Do Before I Start Developing with Sybase WorkSpace

Before you begin working in Sybase WorkSpace, you should be familiar with the Eclipse framework and WorkSpace Basics. Consider reading the planning topics for each of the components:

Review the following so that you can work with your system most efficiently:

Installation

Communicate with the person in your company who did the installation so you know what is available to you. You can also review the Sybase® WorkSpace Installation Guide for additional information. It is strongly suggested that you have a Typical installation to be sure all of Sybase WorkSpace functionality is available to you.

Security

If you will be creating a business process, determine your security needs. See Security Service for details.

Basic Eclipse and Sybase WorkSpace Functionality

The basics for working with Eclipse and Sybase workspace are documented in the Basics section of the Sybase WorkSpace online help. You access the online help from Help on the toolbar. If you see unfamiliar terms such as perspective or view, you can search the online help for an explanation, view the term in the glossary, or, in some cases, the click on a term that is linked to a definition in the glossary. The Eclipse Workbench User Guide is also available online.

Cross-Product Functionality

Review the tables of contents for the online help. This should help you understand where work is done. For example, you can create objects with database management tooling and you can create database services with service development tooling. Knowing the difference avoids confusion. Read How Can I Work with Databases in Sybase WorkSpace for additional information about database work.

Terminology

In addition to becoming familiar with the Eclipse framework, it would benefit you to be familiar with the following acronyms. Acronyms and terms are defined in the glossary. You need not have a thorough understanding of the functionality, but familiarity with the terms, especially when represented by acronyms, will help you understand product functionality:

Setting up Java projects

If you plan to develop service functionality in Java, you should become familiar with the Java development tooling described in the Java Development User's Guide. Some tips for using Java in Sybase WorkSpace are also available under Managing Java Projects and Java Builder Settings. You will use the Java tooling if you develop Java services or transformation services that use custom Java transformation code.

Using Sybase WorkSpace help

You can visit www.eclipse.org to learn more about the Eclipse framework; however, the basics of what you need to know about Eclipse when you are working in Sybase WorkSpace are documented in the Basics section of the Sybase WorkSpace online help. You access the online help from Help on the toolbar.

To set help browser preferences:

The help system uses an embedded browser or an installed Web browser to display the online help. You can select which browser you want to use.

If you are use an external browser, you can access the help at any time. However, if you are using a modal window in the workbench, you cannot access the embedded help browser, so you will have to close the window and then access the help. For example, if you are using a wizard and want more information, you must first close the wizard and then open the help.

  1. Select Window|Preferences from the main menu bar.

    The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. Select Help in the left pane.

The Help options appear in the right pane.

  3. To use an external Web browser, select Always use external browsers.

    Note

If the selected browser is not fully compatible with Internet Explorer or Mozilla, or if JavaScript is disabled, the help shown in the browser may not appear as intended.

  4. (Optional) Choose one of the following:

    • In the Current external browser adapter list box, select the browser.

    • If your system does not have any supported browser adapters installed, only the Custom Browser (user-defined program) in the list box appears. To specify a path to the browser program that launches your browser:

      1. Select Custom Browser.

      2. Either click Browse to select the path or type the path in the Custom Browser command field.

If the program is available on your system path, you can specify only the program name. If the program does not accept URL as its last parameter, use %1 string to denote the position of the URL parameter in the command.

  5. Click OK.
