Creating a Message Definition

After you create a Message Designer project, you can create a message definition in it.

The following workflow guides you through the development process. For assistance in performing these tasks, open the Creating a Message Definition cheat sheet.

  1. Make sure you have created at least one Message Designer project folder. Normally, message definitions are part of a Message Designer project. If you add a message definition to a Sybase Project or other non-Message Designer project, the project is automatically updated with the appropriate resources when the message definition is created.

  2. Choose from the following:

    • Select File|New|Other from the menu bar. Expand the Message Designer node, select Message Definition, and click Next.

    • Click New in the tool bar. Expand the Message Designer node, select Message Definition, and click Next.

    • Right-click in the WorkSpace Navigator and select New|Other. Expand the Message Designer node, select Message Definition, and click Next.

  3. In the New Message Definition wizard, select the target project folder, for example, CWFdev.

  4. In the File name field, enter a name for the message definition. The name must be 64 characters or less. Your filename automatically receives a .wfim extension, for example, myCRMdocs.wfim.

    Note

The name must conform to the naming conventions for XML elements (available at http://www.w3c.com) and the naming conventions for Java classes, available at http://java.sun.com.

For more information, see Troubleshooting Message Definition Objects.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Select defaults for Message properties and click Next.

    Note

It is possible to select any combination of default properties even though it is impractical or impossible to use all the settings in the same message definition.

At any wizard page, click Finish to skip all subsequent pages and accept the workspace default settings for all properties, as defined in the Message Defaults preferences.

  7. Select default Container properties and click Next.

  8. Select default Field properties and click Next.

  9. Select default Date/Time properties and click Next.

  10. Select default Numeric properties and click Next.

  11. Select default Length properties and click Finish.

  12. At the Select Container-Level Defaults for this Message page, enter the following information:

  13. Click Finish. The Message Definition view is displayed.
