Use message default preferences to define the global default properties of message definitions, fields, and containers. Set message default preferences when you plan to create several similar message definitions that reuse the same settings, such as character encoding or delimiter values.
Message default preferences are defined globally for your entire workspace, that is, when you set message default preferences and then create a message definition, the message definition inherits all properties from message default preferences. The inherited message default preferences become the initial properties for the message definition. When you initially create a message definition, you can edit the message definition's default properties, which define the default properties of fields and containers added to that message definition.
To set message default preferences:
Select Window|Preferences from the main menu bar.
The Preferences dialog box appears.
In the left pane, expand Message Designer, then expand Message Defaults.
Select each tab and define the default properties:
Click OK.
When you create a new message definition, the message default preferences serve as the defaults for the message definition. Editing the message default preferences cannot retroactively change an existing message definition.
