Creating a Deployment Profile

Although you can deploy a package at any time after you have created a package profile, creating a deployment profile allows you to store a deployment scenario that can be executed multiple times, for example, to multiple servers. You can use the deployment profile to create the physical package or packages. After the deployment profile is saved, you can execute a deployment using a deployment profile. This generates the package using the latest versions of contained and dependent services. It also applies any configuration overrides specified in the deployment profile This newly created package, which is an updated version of an existing package profile, is then deployed to the targeted server or servers. Using deployment profiles provides these advantages:

Use the New Services Deployment Profile wizard to create a deployment profile.

To create a deployment profile:

  1. In the Service perspective, select File|New|Deployment profile. For other ways to access the New wizard, see Wizards.

  2. On the New Deployment File page, select the destination for the new deployment profile.

  3. Enter a file name and click Next.

  4. On the Description page, enter a description for this profile.

Note that the description should provide information to help you re-use the profile.

  5. On the Packages page, select the packages to be included in this profile and click Next.

The Packages page displays all packages selected for inclusion in this deployment.

  6. On the Target Servers page, select a target server for each package.

A warning notifies you if a package does not have a server specified. Highlight the package and click Next.

The Select Target Server dialog displays.

    Note

If the packages have target servers specified, you can automatically execute the deployment when the deployment is saved by selecting Execute deployment when finished?.

  7. On the Select Target Server dialog, select a server from the list of connection definitions that support deployment of this package.

If a package is targeted to more than one server, a unique package is generated for each targeted server. This allows you to use packaging functionality in the Deployment Profile editor without executing the deployment.

  8. Review the information on the Summary page. Click Back if changes are necessary.

  9. Click Finish.

    • If you selected Execute deployment when finished, the deployment profile file is saved to disk and the deployment is executed.

    • If you did not select Execute deployment when finished, you can execute the deployment later.

To re-use the deployment profile, use the Deployment Profile editor to edit the deployment profile.
