Create a shortcut

Now you create a shortcut for the executable file. The icon serves as a shortcut to open the executable file. You can add the shortcut directly to the desktop or to the program group of your choosing.

  1. Minimize PowerBuilder.

    PowerBuilder is minimized to an icon on the taskbar.

  2. Right-click on a blank area of the desktop.

    Select New>Shortcut from the pop-up menu.

    The Create Shortcut dialog box displays.

  3. Click the Browse button and locate pbtutor.exe.

    If you accepted the default installation folder, this is the location:

    C:\Program Files\Sybase\PowerBuilder 11.0\Tutorial
    \pbtutor.exe
    
  4. Click OK.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Type SportsWear, Inc. as the name of the shortcut.

  7. Click Finish.

    An icon and name display on the desktop.

    Now you must modify a property of the shortcut so that you can run the application. You can also change the icon.

  8. Right-click the SportsWear, Inc. icon on the desktop.

    Select Properties in the pop-up menu.

    The properties sheet for the desktop shortcut displays.

    Shown is the Project object in the Project painter work space. The object name p b tutor dot e x e is displayed at top in a text box for Executable File Name. Next is a blank text box for Resource File Name, a group box of Project Build Options with an unselected check box for Prompt for Overwrite, a checked check box for New Visual Controls Style, and a Rebuild drop down list box set to Incremental. Next is a group box of Code Generation Options including an unchecked check box for Machine Code and an optimization drop down set to Speed. Next is a group box for Version information, including Company and Product Name, Description, and Copyright. At bottom is a list of Libraries with cleared P B D check boxes and blank text boxes for Resource File Name.
  9. Select the Shortcut tab.

    Type the path to the PowerBuilder shared modules in the Start In box.

    Click OK.

    NoteAbout the location of the shared modules When you install PowerBuilder, the installation process puts the DLLs in a shared directory. The default location is: C:\Program Files\Sybase\Shared\PowerBuilder.

    If you want the user to be able to run the application by double-clicking the executable file, you must include the shared directory location in the system environment path.
