A business process service may be either stateful or stateless.
A stateful business process service performs its processing as a sequence of transactions, each one initiated by the receipt of a separate event: operation request or timer event.
A stateless business process service receives a single request event to perform an operation and completes all of its processing during that operation. A stateless business process service contains no other request type operations or wait/delay activities that would cause it to receive an additional event.
