UDDI Terms and Concepts

This section explains the basics of UDDI technology.

About UDDI

Universal Description, Discovery, and Integration (UDDI) is a standard protocol for web-accessible servers. UDDI servers store information about the deployed services and APIs made available by the businesses that are registered with a UDDI server, also known as a UDDI registry.

About UDDI Registries

A UDDI registry is a server that implements the UDDI standard to store and publish web services. Several UDDI registries are publicly accessible. For example, Microsoft, SAP, and Sybase host UDDI registries on publicly accessible servers. A public UDDI registry means anyone can search for web services offered by various organizations.

Types of UDDI Registries

A UDDI Registry is either public or private. Private UDDI registries are available only to authorized users. Public UDDI registries can be browsed by anyone. Some public UDDI registries participate in the UDDI Business Registry (UBR), which means changes to one UDDI registry are copied automatically to other UDDI registries in the UBR network.

About UDDI Browsers

Most public UDDI registries have their own web browser-based user interface for searching and publishing services to the UDDI registry.

Two examples are listed below:

About Sybase WorkSpace UDDI Connection Profiles

In Sybase WorkSpace, you access a UDDI registry within the Enterprise Browser view by directly accessing a UDDI registry connection profile. In the Enterprise Browser view, all UDDI registries appear under the UDDI Registry Connection Profiles node. You can perform all searching, publishing, and testing operations by right-clicking and navigating a UDDI registry. Because a UDDI registry connection profile is part of the Sybase Workspace environment, you can easily define a SOAP service based on a valid, published WSDL. You can do this by right-clicking the WSDL or dragging the WSDL into a project for later use.
