Performing Preinstallation Tasks

Before you install RAP, perform these tasks, including any specific to your operating system.

1. Applying Operating System Patches
   Before you install RAP, identify and apply operating system patches.
2. Obtaining the Local Interface Value
   Every UDP multicast group must be bound to a network IP interface address. The RAP installer calls this value the local interface.
3. Meeting Network Requirements
   Before you install, make sure that your subnetwork meets all requirements.
4. Determining the Multicast IP Address
   Publishers send multicast messages to subscribers from class D IP addresses which must range from 224.0.2.0 – 224.0.255.0. 224.0.2.0 is the default multicast IP address assigned by the installer for all publishers.
5. Changing Linux Host File Mappings
   Change the Linux host file mappings to allow the JINI server to locate remote components.
6. Configuring AIX for Large Files
   For each machine running IBM AIX, configure AIX to allow large file sizes and set the memory requirements to their hard limits.
7. Allocating a Shared Memory Segment for Solaris
   Configure adequate shared-memory resources for the database server in your operating system.
8. Setting the File Descriptor Value for Solaris
   The installation cannot execute if the number of file descriptors is set to unlimited. Modify this value prior to installation.
9. Allocating a Shared Memory Segment for Linux
   Configure adequate shared-memory resources for the database server in your operating system.
10. Accessing SPDC
    Log into the Sybase Product Download Center (SPDC) to dynamically generate license keys for RAP, and optionally download installation media. The SPDC grants download access to Sybase product releases to authorized contact personnel.
