Guidelines for Maps

Use the following guidelines to assist you in managing your maps.

Goal

Action

To map multiple source elements to a single target element

  1. Create links from multiple source elements to a single target element.

  2. Define a Transformation Rule.

Warning: Failure to define a transformation will result in mapping the first source element only.

To maximize the editor view

Double-click the mapName.map tab.

To expand or collapse the schema tree

Right-click the root node of the schema tree and select the Expand All or Collapse All option from the shortcut menu.

Note: If you are working with large schemas that have simpleTypes, consider setting the Schema Preferences to False. This turns off the display of facets and can speed up the loading and display of large schemas in the Viewer. It also makes the schema more readable because there may be fewer nodes to display. See Schema Editor Preferences.

To minimize visual clutter when working on a complex map

  • Expand and collapse each parent element as you work down the tree mapping your links.

  • Reset the line routing to Manhattan in Map Editor. See Changing Editor Preferences.

To link multiple elements or attributes to a single element or attribute

  1. Establish one Controlling map link (solid line).
The transformation rule associated with the target element is be executed when the source element or attribute associated with the Controlling link is encountered during a transformation.

  2. Establish any number of Argument links (dotted line) for that same transformation rule.

To manage unnecessarily complex maps

Break down a complex map into multiple simple maps that use a single source and target schema.
