Chapter 10 Building Data Transformation Diagrams
A data input defines a source of data. It specifies where the data is extracted and the type of the extracted data using data structure columns.
A data input is linked to a source data store (database, XML document, business process, and flat file) using a data connection incoming from its parent transformation process. Source data stores are linked to the transformation process in the information liquidity diagram using data connections.
When a data input has more than one outgoing flow, you can right-click the data input and select Insert Split. It automatically creates a data split after the data input. Conversely, you can select Remove Split to display the data flows instead of the data split.
You can create the following data inputs in a data transformation diagram:
| Object | Tool | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Database input |
Database from where data is extracted. |
| XML input |
XML document from where data is extracted. |
| Web service input |
Business process from where data is extracted. |
| Flat file input |
Flat file from where data is extracted. |
By default, a data input displays in the Bitmap View mode. You can right-click the symbol and deselect this mode to display the object data structure columns.
Dragging and dropping data stores
You can drag a source data store from the browser and drop it onto the data transformation diagram in order to automatically create the corresponding data input.
