Chapter 4 Connecting to the Repository

Upgrading the Repository

When you upgrade PowerDesigner, all modules installed on your machine are upgraded, including the repository.

WARNING!

Caution
Always backup your repository database before upgrading it. In addition, you cannot upgrade the repository through a repository proxy connection. You must perform a direct ODBC connection instead.

The first time you connect to the repository after an upgrade, you are asked to upgrade the database. The database is upgraded according to the modules you have on your machine. For example, if you have the Conceptual Data Model installed on your machine, the CDM part of the database is upgraded together with internal modules shared by other modules (e.g. OBJ module). If you do not have the Object Oriented Model installed on your machine, the OOM part of the database will not be upgraded. The next user of the database that uses the OOM will upgrade the database upon connection.

It is not required to have all PowerDesigner modules to upgrade the repository database.

Since the shared modules are upgraded in the database, any user with a previous version module is no longer allowed to connect to this database. All clients using the same repository database must upgrade simultaneously in order to be able to connect to the same database.

Repository upgrade failure

In case of upgrade failure linked to network or permission problem, or insufficient disk space, you should restore the repository database from your backup version and retry an upgrade when problems are solved.

If upgrade fails because of the data in your database, then you should contact technical support for assistance.
