Chapter 6 Setting up the Repository with the Repository Proxy on any DBMS
When you install the PowerDesigner repository to be used with the repository proxy, you have to go through the following process:
The PowerDesigner repository proxy is an executable, which runs on the database side, either on the same computer or on the same LAN. Thus, the PowerDesigner client connects to this executable with a dedicated protocol instead of directly connect to the database. This configuration reduces the network communication because the proxy server is closer to the database server than the client.
Another advantage of the repository proxy is that its cache can serve all users. If one or more documents are frequently requested, these are likely to be in the proxy's cache, which will improve client response time.
Only the PowerDesigner repository and other modules are installed on the client workstations. The ODBC drivers and the database client are installed on the proxy server. The client access the database on the server via the proxy which is installed on the same computer as the database or at least on the same LAN.
