Chapter 2 Installing PowerDesigner

Installation basics

To use PowerDesigner, you need to install the following:

Software ... to install
PowerDesigner module Always
ODBC drivers To use the ODBC interface

Depending on the PowerDesigner product, you can install the following components:

The Report and the Free Model are installed automatically for all PowerDesigner products.

Upgrading from previous version

If the product that you will install corresponds to an upgrade from a previous version, the setup program will look for previous versions of PowerDesigner on your computer before installing the latest version. This is to let you recover previous version settings.

Upgrading from version 12

If the product that you will install corresponds to an upgrade from version 12 and that you have Visual Studio 2005 installed on your computer, the setup program will ask you if you want to install the Visual Studio 2005 plug-in for PowerDesigner.

Administrator profile

Under Windows NT4, 2000 and XP, non-Administrator users may receive a warning message during installation. Setup requires write access on certain directory and on the registry that a non-Administrator user may not have. Setup can go on despite that warning message.

Additional products to install

The \Support directory on your software CD contains several setup programs for additional applications like Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you need these programs, you just have to double-click the executable file in the \Support directory, and follow the installation procedure.

Eclipse plug-in

If you had manually installed the Eclipse plug-in in PowerDesigner version 10 or 11 and want to upgrade to version 12.x you have to remove the plug-in manually. To do so, open the Eclipse directory, and remove any PowerDesigner-related folder under the \configuration, \features, and \workspace\.metadata\.plugins folders.
