Setting Help Browser Preferences

The help system uses a browser to display online help either in an embedded Web browser or an installed external Web browser. You can select which browser you want to use.

When you are in a modal window, you are prevented from interacting with the embedded help browser. For example, if you are in a wizard and need help, you have to close the wizard to open the help. If you are using an external browser, you can always open the help.

To set help browser preferences:

  1. Select Window|Preferences from the main menu bar.

    The Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. Select Help in the left pane.

The Help options appear in the right pane.

  3. To use an external Web browser, select Always use external browsers.

    Note

If the selected browser is not fully compatible with Internet Explorer or Mozilla, or if JavaScript is disabled, the help shown in the browser may not appear as intended.

  4. Click OK.

    Note

If you perform the above procedure and the help does not open in an external browser, perform step 1 and step 2 above and do one of the following:

    • In the Current external browser adapter list box, select the browser.

    • If your system does not have any supported browser adapters installed, only the Custom Browser (user-defined program) in the list box appears. To specify a path to the browser program that launches your browser:

      1. Select Custom Browser.

      2. Either click Browse to select the path or type the path in the Custom Browser command field.

If the program is available on your system path, you can specify only the program name. If the program does not accept URL as its last parameter, use %1 string to denote the position of the URL parameter in the command.

      3. Click OK.
