Introduction to Sybase Help

Online help topics come from several documentation collections. The source of a help topic is identified in the title bar above the content window.

Navigating the Help

To navigate the help:

  1. Select Help|Help Contents from the main menu bar to open the help.

  2. From the online help bookshelf, select the collection that you want to view.

  3. Expand the collection to find the topic that you want to see.

  4. To view the topic, click its link.

  5. Use the Go Forward and Go Back buttons to return to topics you have previously viewed.

  6. To synchronize the navigator with the current topic, click Show in Table of Contents Show in TOC Button.

    Synchronizing is useful if you follow several links or perform a search and you want to match the navigation tree with the current topic.

Searching

To search all documentation collections:

  1. Enter a query in the Search field.

  2. Click Go.

    The search results display in the Search Results pane.

To narrow a search:

  1. Click Search Scope.

    The Select Search Scope dialog box appears.

  2. Select Search only the following topics.

  3. Click New.

    The New Search List dialog box appears.

  4. Enter a descriptive name for your search in the List name field.

  5. Select the topics you want to search in the Topics to search section.

    Selecting a top-level checkbox extends the scope of the search to all subtopics. Use the plus and minus signs to the left of topics to expand and collapse the associated subtopics.

  6. Click OK.

    The Select Search Scope dialog box appears with your selection highlighted.

  7. Click OK.

  8. Click GO.

    The search results display in the Search Results pane.

    Note

    The narrowed search scope remains in effect for future searches until it is changed.

To search from the main toolbar:

  1. Click Search Search Button.

    The Search dialog box appears.

  2. Select the Help Search tab.

  3. Enter an expression in the Search expression field.

    From the Search expression drop-down list, you can choose to either repeat or modify a recent search.

  4. In the Scope section, select All or Working Set.

    All searches all documentation collections; Working Set limits the scope to a subset of a documentation collection.

  5. If Working Set is selected, click Choose.

    The Select Working Set dialog box appears.

  6. Select a working set from the Select a working set list.

  7. Click OK.

    Note

    If no working sets are defined in the Select a working set list, refer to steps 3-8 of To narrow a search to create new search working sets.

Navigating Using the Keyboard

You can navigate the help system with the keyboard using the following key combinations:

  • To go to the next link, button, or topic, press Tab inside a frame (page).

  • To expand/collapse a tree node, press Right/Left arrows.

  • To move to the next topic node, press Down arrow or Tab

  • To move to the previous topic node, press Up arrow or Shift+Tab

  • To scroll all the way up or down, press Home or End.

  • To go back, press Alt+Left arrow; to go forward press Alt+Right arrow.

  • To go to the next topic, press Ctrl+Tab.

    There are many topics in the help system.

  • To move to previous topic, press Shift+Ctrl+Tab.

  • To print the current page or active topic, press Ctrl+p.
