Editing a Message Definition

Use the Message Definition Editor to edit a message definition by modeling a custom wire format message as a tree of containers and fields.

To edit a message definition:

  1. In the WorkSpace Navigator of the Service Development perspective, expand the project that contains the message definition you want to work with.

  2. Expand MessageDesigns, then expand MessageDefinitions.

  3. Double-click the message definition you want to work with. The message definition has a .wfm extension.

The message definition opens in the Message Definition Editor.

  4. Select the Message Details tab and perform the following actions in any combination:

    • Add a container.

    • Add a field.

    • Drag and drop a container or field to another location in the tree.

When you drag the field, a horizontal line appears, indicating the new location.

    • Use accelerator keys to add child nodes and insert sibling nodes in the message tree.

To change message definition default settings:

You can change design-related default settings for custom messages after the message definition is created.

  1. Right-click in the Message Definition editor and select Change design defaults. The Change Message Node Defaults dialog opens.

  2. Use the tabs in the dialog to view and modify design-related defaults for Container, Field, Date / Time, Numeric, and Length.

    Note

The Message tab of the Change Message Node Defaults dialog is read-only and displays the settings in place when the message definition was originally created.
