Installing the Server With the Installer

Learn how to install the server components in GUI mode.

If you are installing the Cluster Edition in private installation mode, use the installer for each instance in the cluster. This ensures that environment variables, soft links, and so on are set correctly for each instance.

Sybase recommends installing products as a sybase user, however, root permissions are not required to run the installer. The Installer creates the target directory (if necessary) and installs the selected components into that directory. At the end of the installation, you can verify the product installation. You may need to perform additional configuration procedures before you can use some products.

You must source the environment variables needed for Adaptive Server products by running the SYBASE.csh script file after exiting the Installer.

  1. Stop and shut down all programs before running the installer.
  2. Insert the Adaptive Server CD in the appropriate drive, or download and extract the Adaptive Server install image from the Sybase Product Download Center (SPDC).
  3. Create a /cdrom directory, and then enter:
    mount -v "cdrfs" -r <device> /cdrom
  4. Launch the Installer. For a CD drive enter:
    /cdrom/setup
  5. Select a directory for the installation. Click Next to accept the default of:
    /opt/sybase
  6. You can choose from three types of installations in the Install Type window:
    • Typical
    • Full
    • Custom
  7. If you select Custom, the Products and Features Selection window displays. Select the products to install by checking the box next to the product name. Some features are dependent on other features; therefore, the installer prevents you from unselecting some items without first unselecting others.
  8. Select the installation type for the Adaptive Server suite. The available types to be selected are different for different platforms.
    • Licensed copy of Adaptive Server Suite: Choose this if you have a licensed copy of Adaptive Server.
    • Evaluation Edition of Adaptive Server Suite: Choose this if you would like to evaluate Adaptive Server.
    1. Click Next.
  9. Select the most appropriate country from the drop-down list, read the license terms, and then click I agree. Click Next.
    • If you chose "licensed" install, the installer prompts the SySAM license. In this panel, you can specify the license file, use an existing license server, or proceed with the installation without license.
    • If you choose Unlicensed install the software will work for 30 days from the original installation date.
    1. Click Next. The Sybase Software Asset Management Notification screen appears.
  10. This step is not seen if you choose to install the Evaluation Edition. If you specified a served license, you are prompted to set up the license server. Enter the license key if you have one. Otherwise choose to continue without. Click Next. A summary screen appears. Click Next to install the SySAM server.
  11. This step is not seen if you choose to install the Evaluation Edition. Select the license type for the Cluster Edition:
    • Unknown – without a license
    • CP – CPU license
    • DT – development and test license
    • AC – OEM Application Deployment CPU license
    • LP – application specific CPU license
  12. Configuring your server for e-mail notification enables designated users to receive information about license management events requiring attention. Provide the following information:
    • SMTP server host name
    • SMTP server port number
    • E-mail Return Address
    • Recipient e-mail addresses
    • Message severity that triggers e-mail messages
  13. The Product Selection Summary window displays the selections that you have made. Verify that you have selected the correct type of installation, and that you have enough disk space to complete the process. Click Next.
  14. The Install Progress window shows the progress of the installation. The Install Status window displays the result of the installation process. Click Next.
  15. The Configure Server Progress window displays the progress of the server configuration. The Installation Complete window is the last window. If you encounter any errors, see the Troubleshooting Guide. At the end of a successful installation click Finish.
