With AIX 5.1, IBM introduced a new 64-bit binary format that is not compatible with the earlier AIX 4.3.3 format. To enable you to continue using the AIX 64-bit platform, Sybase released a new 64-bit Adaptive Server version 12.5.0.1 for AIX 5.1. If you are running 64-bit Adaptive Server on AIX 5.1 an upgrade to Adaptive Server 15.0 involves only one additional step. Prior to installing Adaptive Server 15.0 the operating system must be upgraded to AIX 5.2. See “System requirements” for details on the version and patch level required.
If you are still running 64-bit Adaptive on AIX 4.3.3, the upgrade process involves a few extra steps. The normal process is to install the new software into a different directory on the same machine and then alternate between the old Adaptive Server and the new Adaptive Server. However, due to the incompatible binary format you cannot run the new software until the operating system is upgraded. At the same time, once the operating system is upgraded, you cannot run the old software. The scenario described in the next section assumes that Adaptive Server 15.0 will be installed on a machine different from the machine on which the old 64-bit Adaptive Server is running.
